Jewlery care & cleaning
ALL Sterling Silver jewelry is prone to oxidization, aka to tarnish over time. Natural elements in the environment such as oxygen, moisture, acids, and oils react with the metals causing them to eventually tarnish and lose their shine. It is natural and is not a cause of concern.
To retain the beauty of your silver jewels and slow down the oxidization process it is important to take some essential measures:
Keep your Jewelry Dry
Avoid wearing your silver when in the shower, swimming, during house chores, or working out.
Avoid storing your jewelry in direct sunlight.
Store your Silver Jewels Separate
Store your silver in its own Euthenia pouch, jewelry box with compartments (Ziploc bags work too) when not worn.
DIY CLEANING METHOD
The great news is simple cleaning measures can reverse this chemical reaction yielding back luster to your silver.
ALUMINUM FOIL & BAKING SODA METHOD
You need a bowl, aluminum foil, boiling water, and baking soda.
Line the bottom of the bowl with aluminum foil. Fill the aluminum-lined bowl with a cup of boiling water and one tablespoon of baking soda (1 tablespoon of baking soda per cup of water). Place the piece of silver jewelry in the bowl, making sure it touches the aluminum foil. This is paramount for the chemical reaction to occur. Allow your jewelry sit for two to 10 minutes, depending on the level of tarnish.
DISH SOAP AND WATER METHOD
You need a bowl, warm water, and dish soap or laundry detergent.
Fill a small bowl with warm water. Add a drop or so of dish soap or laundry detergent and mix everything up. Grab a microfiber cloth and dip it into the soapy solution. Use a soft cloth and rub your jewelry gently with the soapy water.
THE TOOTHPASTE METHOD
You need Toothpaste
Before you start this method, make sure you know exactly which type of toothpaste you are using because not all formulas are created equal. Whitening toothpaste is not gentle enough, and charcoal toothpaste will likely be too physically abrasive for the metal.
Add a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to a soft-bristled toothbrush or a microfiber cloth. Take the cloth or toothbrush and gently rub the silver until you see the tarnish disappear.
Finally
Remove, rinse, and dry with a gentle cloth in a circular motion.
Repeat when necessary
